Does anyone know a good herbal remedy for a slow metabolisim?

October 30th, 2008

Recently I broke my foot in several places and have not yet gained back my "freedom" so to speak. I am in a walking cast and am not allowed to take it off for any length of time. I am not allowed to "walk" or do exercises untiil I can walk without help again. I would like to find an herbal additive or something that I can use. Please only serious posts. Thanks!

i've herad peppermint aids digestions, and i know that chewing gum will speed up digestion. so…i'd say…mint gum. also, zinc acts as a catalyst with hydrochloric acid. that'll speed things up, too. prolly help you heal up faster. drink milk, too! at least 3 glasses a day. that's not for metabolism so much as it's for your foot ;-)

Natural home remedies to get rid of big pores and blotchiness?

October 30th, 2008

Okay I have big pores and I really want to size them down so they will be unnoticable, because it really makes my skin look dirty. I also have very blotchy red looking skin. Does anyone know of any natural remedies to get rid of this stuff? Thanks!!

I've been reading a lot about aloe being great for all kinds of skin problems. I get lots of natural solutions from www.care2.com. Here is a link. Scroll to the bottom to see all skin solutions. http://www.care2.com/channels/solutions/bms/1517#more

From the site, if you do a search on "pores" you'll get a list of a bunch of links for pores, just look for the ones that apply to you. Here is one. http://www.care2.com/channels/solutions/bms/1517
Nourishing Cucumber-Avocado Facial Mask
This magic formula does it all: nourishes, tightens pores, and helps slough off dead skin cells to reveal fresher skin.

Place the following ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth:
1/2 cup coarsely chopped peeled cucumber
1/2 cup coarsely chopped peeled avocado
1 egg white
2 teaspoons powdered milk

Refrigerate for 30 minutes, then apply to face and neck. Leave the mask in place for 30 minutes, then rinse with warm water. Splash cool water on after that, then gently pat dry.

Good luck.

Those other people making comments need to get a life. They're probably mad because they have a small. . .penal code.

Herbal remedies for kidney stones/prevention of?

October 30th, 2008

What herbal remedies are good to take to deal with kidney stones while you still have them, and what might be a good life-long remedy to prevent future occurrences?

I have one little guy (2mm) in my right ureter which I am waiting to pass. I'm drinking as much as possible, but if there are any herbal remedies that might assist with pain, passage or dissolution, I'd love to hear about it.

And since I never want another, I'd like to learn about natural remedies for prevention - something I can do for the rest of my life.

I've done some research already and have found some suggestions, but nothing consistent.
Since I haven't yet passed it I don't know which kind it is, if that makes any difference.

Ultimately, they are typically formed when someone gets more Calcium than their body can absorb (among other minerals taken in too high of doses), then the Calcium builds up in their kidneys.

With that being said, the main natural products that help with kidney health are Cranberry, Juniper Berry, Corn Silk, and Uva Ursi.
No supplement can make any medical claims on their own, so the supplements can't claim to help/prevent kidney stones…. but if your kidneys are healthy, they should run really well.

What is the difference between herbal medicines and the medicine the doctor prescribes?

October 30th, 2008

Don't they both come from plants? Are they made diffrently? Do prescription drugs contain something extra?

The primary difference is quality assurance.

Your grandmothers chicken soup and steam treatments may in fact give you a greater benefit than anything your doc could prescribe, but can we gaurentee that result for all people treated, can we gaurentee that result for all grandmothers.

Thats the entire debate. Some medications are directly derived from herbals, but the quality assurance they go through to ensure you are receiving a controlled dose is the whole key. And its the only thing that matters. Receiving too low or high a dose is either a waste of your money or a threat to your well being. Could you imagine an aspirin bottle filled with some pills that had 10 mg and other pills that contained 15000mg? Thats nuts, … thats the herbal market.

Now the second response. There are probably 1000 times as many medications that have been derived chemically without any involvement of herbs, plants or food ever having been involved. Current research uses computer modeling to design medications exactly for their specific purpose.

Why do doctors distrust natural medicine?

October 30th, 2008

Many of the drugs that doctors Rx have not even been around in the last 100 years. Many of these drugs do work but not without side effects that may cause other health problems.

Natural treatments have been around for 1000's of years with fewer to no side effects.

Why do doctors discredit natural medicine?
I’m not trying to defunct Rx medicine; there are some very good and needed drugs. If I am in need of an Rx I will take it, BUT… as a patient I would like to know all my options that are the most healthy and with the least amount of side effects.

Because there is little evidence that these things work. Rx drugs are put through a rigorous process to prove that they are safe and effective. Natural products are not. The manufacture of Rx drugs is highly regulated so that each tablet is the same and contains the same amount of drug. Natural products are not. We have examined and know the drug interactions for Rx drugs. We don't know the interactions for natural products.

Many of the herbals that are sold have little or know active ingredient. Many interact with prescription medications. Many have severe side effects but people don't know about them because they haven't been studied. Did you know that St. John's Wort decreases the effectiveness of birth control pills by 50%. Try finding that information on the bottle. I have seen patients die because they took herbal supplements. I have seen patients that have had transplanted organs rejected because their herbal supplements interacted with the rejection medications.

A lot of natural products have been used for years but don't actually do anything. There was a recent study done to prove that Echinacea helps colds but the study proved that Echinacea does nothing for colds (I found that amusing).

I believe that there is a lot of benefit in natural medicine but it HAS to be studied before it is used or it can do more damage than good.

People here mention the greed of the doctors and drug companies. Do you think that the people who make herbals are doing it out of the goodness of their hearts? They are in it to make money too. They don't tell you about the risk of herbals. They just make up claims of what they can do with absolutely no proof and they put lives in danger to make money. They are far worse than the doctors.

Another thing to consider, the average life-expectancy in the year 1900 (before modern drugs were around) was 47 year old. The average life-expectancy now is 77 years old because of modern medicine. Natural medicine may have been around but it obiously is not as effective or people would have lived just as long.

So if you really want to abstain from modern drugs and only use natural medicine, be my guest. I would just advise against making any long-term retirement plans because you probably won't live that long. Good Luck.

Are most naturopathic doctors self-employed?

October 30th, 2008

Hi,
I’m very interested in naturopathic medicine, however I am not sure how the job outlook is for this field. Can patients use their health insurance to pay for naturopathic doctors? Do naturopathic doctors work as family physicians where they have commmunication with allopathic doctors if necessary?
Basically, can I get a job if I get a degree in this.

1. insurance does cover alternative medicine such as ND and DC medicines
2. ND and DC are sort locked away from mainstream medicine, because of the older MD faction who set out to destroy all not medical professions (DOs,ODs,DDSs,DVMs(yes some of these old MDs work on animals lol),DMDs,NDs and DCs).
3. in terms of self-employment yes you can be, you just got to be aggressive in gaining own patients just like a DC would, but do not make outrageous claims (bad DCs and new DCs grads make a mistake of using the word "CURE" in their ads).
on a sidenote:
alot of NDs have another degree on top of their undergrad. which usually are one of the following: MSc, MPH, PhD, DC and rarely you will find an ND who is also an MD (my wife's uncle was an ND who later got his MD)

email me if you have further questions regarding MD/ND practices.

Could ice cubes be an alternative in healing mild acne problems and if not what alternative must I use?

October 30th, 2008

Not sure it could totally heal them . . . but it might help in the healing process, by reducing swelling of the pimples and whatnot.
